 I am currently working towards obtaining my Real Estate Appraiser License and am writing to ask for your consideration to provide me with the opportunity to obtain the training hours required for licensure. The prerequisite courses to become a Real Estate Appraiser Trainee have been completed as of October 2021 through the Appraisal Institute.

 I take great pride in both my personal and professional growth and look forward to having a fulfilling career as a Real Estate Appraiser. On a personal level, a few years ago, I made the decision to temporarily step away from the professional world to full-time parent three young children. The time allowed me to explore my interests and inspired me to pivot my career to real estate, a long-time hobby of mine. The courses I’ve taken from the Appraisal Institute have left me highly motivated and optimistic of my abilities to build a successful career in Real Estate Appraisal.

 As a Trainee, I will work to gain the necessary skill set to be a proficient Appraiser with a team mindset. My educational background in Psychology coupled with my experience in healthcare has provided for a foundational understanding of the interpersonal relationships and communication required to build a network and deliver on expectations. Specific qualities and skills that I possess necessary to be a notable Real Estate Appraiser and Trainee include:

  • Adherence to procedure, established systems and policies to ensure accuracy- With previous experience working in the healthcare setting within the confines of strict protocols, I      was consistently successful maintaining essential duties within those confines.
  • Adaptable and quick learner- I enjoy the opportunities new environments and experiences provide. Completing the Appraisal Institute courses provided me with a piqued interest in real estate appraisal leaving me highly motivated. I am also proficient using the MLS system to create a comparative market analysis.
  • Attention to detail- I can see the big picture or hone-in and direct my focus to specialize on specific processes, particularly inconsistencies.
  • Dependable and steady- I have a disciplined work ethic. I provide a structured and timely environment in which all needs are individually met for every member of my household daily in addition to focused achievement at the Appraisal Institute.
  • Applying logic, precision and determination to achieve results- The questions “how” and “why” have been a motivating force that fuel my intrigue and challenge my knowledge to grow. I enjoy learning and using analytical thinking to work through and solve problems.

My name is Kelvin Figgs. I am currently in the process of obtaining my real estate appraisal license. I most recently worked in the oil and gas industry as an inside sale representative. I’m currently looking for a sponsor in order continue my experience hours portion of the appraising trainee requirements. I have already completed over 500 hours with my current mentor and am interested in obtaining another sponsor so that I can be well versed in different applications of the appraisal practices. l have already completed all 150+ hours of my educational requirements. Lastly I have 100% availability to begin training under a new sponsor. I only recently learned of the appraisal side of real estate and would like to eventually become a Certified General Appraiser. I received my Bachelors degree from Texas State university in 2015.

Haginas & Shillings is a third-party contractor serving lending institutions in the administration of the lender’s collateral valuation programs, specifically commercial appraisal ordering and review services. A position is available for a commercial appraisal Job Manager.  Full time, employee status, is preferred although we can consider part-time arrangements.  All inquiries will be considered although the ideal candidate will have prior review experience and “lender-side” RIMS experience. Must have MAI designation, be state certified, and be proficient with basic Office computer processing programs.  Competitive compensation and work from home opportunity, and home based employees could potentially reside anywhere within the state. Job duties include working with the lender to obtain bids and order the report, receipt of the appraisal, and completing the appraisal review. Reviews subject property information and requests any additional information that may facilitate the appraisal process.  Prepares appraisal engagement assignment letters.  Reviews appraisal reports for USPAP compliance and City, State and Federal (if needed) requirements.  Consults with external appraisers.  Makes sound recommendations to management regarding the credibility and reliability of appraisal reports.  May prepare internal Cost Estimates, Probable Price Estimates, and Appraisals.  Must understand real estate appraisal principles and terminology.  May serve as team lead and/or as a project manager coordinating larger appraisal/valuation activities.  Successful candidates must be self-directed and possess superior customer service skills.  Performs other duties as assigned.


This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting temperature and air conditions.

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier III Level.   



Requires a Bachelor degree in Real Estate, Business Administration, Public Administration or a closely related field.


Four (4) years of professional experience in real estate activities, design or a closely related experience are required. 

Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.


PREFERENCES:  Although not required, preference will be given to applicants with the following:

  • Texas State Certified General Real Estate Appraiser.  Other Real Estate certifications, licenses or professional designations may be considered.
  • 4+ years of experience in commercial real estate appraisal with a minimum of 1 year of commercial real estate appraisal review.
  • 1+ year of condemnation appraisal experience and/or 1+year of condemnation appraisal review experience.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.  Working knowledge in PowerPoint.  Experience with Access and Publisher is an advantage.
  • Strong writing skills and solid oral communication.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships at diverse levels with both internal and external customers.

**Preference will also be given to candidates who possess a valid Texas Driver’s license and are in compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2). 

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**   



However, the department may administer a skill assessment evaluation.
